I had been reading a lot of painting books and thinking thoughts similar to this, this quote says it perfectly. Art really is a way to express the feelings we have inside. I don’t consider myself an incredible writer or poet. But by painting, or creating of any type I am able to unfold my story. Color and texture I am deeply in love with. My passion is to enjoy myself and set myself free inside so to speak. In this way art can be extremely healing. You must let go of your fear or need for perfection. I don’t think one way of doing things is a great idea. Have the freedom to explore and discover new things. Everyone has the ability to create. A lot of it has to do with your mindset. Practice and gain the confidence you need. I still don’t think I’ve reached perfection, far from it. But I keep on trying and practive when I can. Press on, and you will be suprised to find where it takes you. It might just be the start of something amazing!

My son David and I are starting to make art boxes to sell on Etsy. David is so excited about becoming a part of this.We are going to make mostly Steampunk style boxes. These boxes will be one of a kind, extremely rare designs. They will be made with buttons, old keys, cones,watch parts, jewelry pieces, beads, chain,etc. We are going to collect boxes and then give them a facelift. We will have fun finding and creating. They will come in every size and shape. Each box we create will have its own personality and be a treasure to hold treasures. It will be exciting to see what unfolds.We will be giving our Etsy shop some new items and fresh look. So I hope you enjoy what comes forth. I’ve mentioned before that I can do custom work. Let me explain what that means. I can paint something you picture in your mind or have a photograph of for you. Textural Painting

A lot of the time I like to get really wild, spontaneous, and free with my art. Today I started a painting with molding paste that I swept from side to side along the painting. Next I glued keys, buttons,washers, cheese cloth, old spoons, and old scissors. Then I painted a picture with the textures. I added a face. I then added more molding paste and began to paint with my fingers so I could feel the paint. I then envisioned the face having a meditative expression. I next painted her hair and then added gold to the entire painting. I put a heart in the center of the scissors, like the cutting away that happens to us and the pain of the earth. The colors in the painting tended to be blue and green and started to resemble the world. The spoon reminded me of everything we are fed in our lives. She kind of makes me think of mother earth but she also reminds me of life ‘s fragility.

Saraswati-Plaster/Gold paint

I found this beautiful Saraswati at Goodwill.In Hinduism she is the Goddess of art, music, and knowledge. Maybe that’s why I identify with her so much. Well I don’t know about that knowledge part. It appears to be made of plaster. I just love her. I gold-leafed it. I love things from Asia and always seem to be attracted to them. I actually didn’t know who she was and decided I would do a little research on her, and I am so very glad that I did!

The Sanskrit word sara means “essence” and swa means “self. “She dresses in white, and holds prayer beads’ and a palm leaf scroll, indicating knowledge. Saraswati usually rides a swan,while playing music on a veena. Shes the mother of the Vedas, the ancient scriptures of India. She is identified with the Saraswati River and it’s nourishing and purifying aspects. She is the consort of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. She is a supremely beautiful and alluring woman. Go artist women, embrace the Saraswati within!

Rethinking Permanent Markers

Magpie and Babies in Nest-Sharpie and Bic

I have been having a lot of fun with permanent markers. I really like using different kinds of ink to create with. There are a variety of pens and ink I use for different projects.

My favorite being the good ol’ Sharpie. Now you can get them in a variety of assortments and colors. I prefer the fine tips and they also come in ultra fine and dual sided tips. Sharpie always has vivid and long-lasting color. They work for art, mural, wood, just about anything. Of course don’t forget labeling. I think they can do much more than we think if we just use a little imagination. The wonderful thing is Sharpie are very cheap compared to markers at the art store and they last forever.

I also really like using wood pens that you get at the Hardware store their fun for a variety of projects. They work really well over the top of permanent markers. Make sure to use in a well ventalited area though because they are strong. I have made really cute wooden pendants with these.

I also like drawing and doing crafts with gold leaf markers. They work with a variety of mediums and are so rich. They are very inexpensive and can really make things fancy. I use them for drawing, jewelry, and a variety of crafts. You can purchase them just about anywhere, including the drug store.

I also recently discovered Bic Permanent Markers these work great for drawing, signs, cards, and bookmarks. Not as good quality as a Sharpie but they do come in a variety of colors. I recently purchased a set of 24 including flesh tones. Fun stuff for school projects, fliers, crafts, and more.

So get wild, and make your mark!

Little Shops and Boutiques

: Whatnots and Dodads

I love little shops that sell things that you don’t really need. Especially ones that smell really good and play soft music. I love looking at Vintage goodies, soaps and perfumes, and especially arts and crafts. I love places that decorate the windows all up lovingly for the Holidays. I have been thinking about trying to market to specialty shops and small boutiques.

I want to share with you three very special shops that I love to visit. Beware if you go in, you will probably come out with something wonderful.

My absolute favorite shop is Love Letters. Loveletters is a charming and romantic boutique in old Fair Oaks. Old Fair Oaks still feels like the olden days even though it is close to city life. Here you can find awesome shops and chickens roaming freely in the streets. This shop has all kinds of quotes, cool artwork,cards, ribbons, soaps,and beautiful frames.

My next favorite is recently discovered Magpie on Lincoln Ave. It has a very French flair to it. Lots of wonderful things like cozy slippers,perfumes, hats, decorations, garden things, and it is filled with white. It is very whimsical and unique. This store is a visual delight!

My next favorite is Whatnots and Dodads. This store is also on Lincoln Ave. Filled with vintage items and crafts. Lots of old books, Aunt Jemima’s, costume jewelry, fairies, antiques, and more. They have the best window displays!

Tangerine Gifts & Accessories in Sunnyvale is also very fun. Lots of jewelry (all prices) hats,scarfs, and the best massage oils and bath goodies made by the owner.
